The best places to find scholarly articles on  this topic are GeoRef, GEOBASE, and Academic Search Complete.  (From library.ship.edu, choose "Library Databases A-Z" and then "G" for GeoRef and GEOBASE or "A" for Academic Search Complete.)

I did a search on "Tennessee River" and found numerous articles.  You can limit your search to Scholarly articles in Academic Search Complete by choosing that option on the search screen.  Both GEOBASE and GeoRef include only scholarly articles.

Many of these articles will be in full text.  You can order articles not immediately avaiable by choosing "Check Availability".
