Free does not mean that you do not have to pay for them.   Free electives are any courses that do not satisfy general education, major or minor requirements.   Most majors allow a designated number of free elective credits for degree completion.   Free electives give you the opportunity to take additional courses in your major or minor, to take courses to gain desired knowledge or skills, to explore a potential major, or to take courses just for the fun of it.   It is a wise strategy to reserve most of your available free elective credits until later in your degree progress.
